Twisting Sit-Up on Incline Bench
Muscle group: Abs
Twisting Sit-Up on Incline Bench is an exercise from the “Abs” group. It mainly works: Rectus abdominis, External oblique, Internal oblique. Equipment needed: Bench.

How to do Twisting Sit-Up on Incline Bench
Starting position
- Set an ab bench to a slight decline and hook your feet under the pads.
- Sit up and lean back so your head is lower than your hips.
- Touch your fingertips to your temples or cross your arms over your chest — don't lace your hands behind your head.
- Brace your abs, round your upper back slightly and tuck your chin a little.
Execution
- Exhale and raise your torso, starting by curling your upper back.
- In the second half of the lift, rotate to one side: your right shoulder moves toward your left knee. The twist comes from your torso, not your elbow.
- Return to center, then inhale and lower yourself slowly without lying fully back on the bench.
- On the next rep, twist to the other side.
Common mistakes
- Yanking your head with your hands — overloads the neck and the abs do less.
- Dropping back onto the bench — you lose the lowering phase and strain the lower back.
- Twisting only the elbow — the obliques barely engage.
- Starting with too steep an angle — technique falls apart quickly.
Beginner tips
- Start with a minimal decline and raise it once 12 reps feel easy.
- Arms crossed on your chest make it easier — start there.
- Keep the number of twists equal on both sides.
Alternatives
- Sit-Up — the same lift on the floor, without the twist
- Standing Side Bend with Dumbbell — oblique work standing with a dumbbell
- Side Plank — static oblique work without a bench
