Standing Side Bend with Dumbbell
Muscle group: Abs
Standing Side Bend with Dumbbell is an exercise from the “Abs” group. It mainly works: Internal oblique, External oblique, Rectus abdominis. Equipment needed: Dumbbells.

How to do Standing Side Bend with Dumbbell
Starting position
- Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart and knees soft.
- Hold a dumbbell in one hand, arm hanging along your thigh, palm facing in.
- Place your free hand on your hip or lightly at your temple.
- Brace your abs, keep your shoulders open and look straight ahead.
Execution
- Inhale and slowly bend sideways toward the dumbbell, sliding it down your thigh to about knee level.
- Move strictly side to side — no leaning forward or back and no twisting.
- Exhale and use the obliques on the opposite side to return upright. Don't go past vertical to the other side.
- Finish all reps on one side, then switch the dumbbell to the other hand.
Common mistakes
- Leaning forward or twisting — the load moves from the obliques to the lower back.
- A dumbbell in each hand — the weights cancel each other out and the obliques barely work.
- Jerking back up — momentum does the work and the spine takes extra stress.
- Bending the working arm — the biceps joins in and the range gets shorter.
Beginner tips
- Start light: range and control matter more than weight here.
- Picture yourself standing between two walls so you don't drift forward.
- Do the same number of reps on each side.
Alternatives
- Side Plank — works the obliques with no load and no spinal movement
- Twisting Sit-Up on Incline Bench — obliques in a rotational movement
