How to do Smith Machine Front Press

Starting position

  1. Place an upright-back bench under the Smith bar so the bar comes down in front of your face to your upper chest.
  2. Set the safety stops at chin or upper-chest height.
  3. Sit with your hips and back against the pad, feet on the floor wider than your shoulders, abs braced.
  4. Grip the bar slightly wider than your shoulders and unhook it by rotating your wrists.

Execution

  1. Inhale and slowly lower the bar in front of your face to chin or upper-chest level.
  2. At the bottom your elbows point down and slightly forward, forearms close to vertical.
  3. Exhale and press the bar up until your arms are nearly straight, without locking your elbows.
  4. After the set, rotate your wrists to hook the bar back on.

Common mistakes

  • Bench too far or too close — the bar hits your face or drifts away from you, making the path awkward.
  • Arching the lower back — your back leaves the pad and the load shifts to the lower back.
  • Elbows flared straight out — the shoulder joint gets overloaded.
  • Cutting the top short — the delts and triceps do less work.

Beginner tips

  • Before your first set, check the bar path with the empty bar and adjust the bench.
  • The Smith machine is good for learning: no balancing, so you can focus on form.
  • Add weight in small steps once all reps feel comfortable.
