Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise
Muscle group: Legs
Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise is an exercise from the “Legs” group. It mainly works: Gastrocnemius (calf), Soleus. Equipment needed: Dumbbells.

How to do Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise
Starting position
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms by your sides.
- Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart, toes pointing forward.
- For more range, stand with the balls of your feet on the edge of a stable step or plate. Knees straight but not locked.
Execution
- Exhale and rise onto your toes as high as you can, pressing through the base of your big toes.
- Hold the top for 1 second, squeezing your calves.
- Inhale and lower slowly; on a raised surface, sink into a light calf stretch at the bottom.
- Keep the dumbbells still at your sides and your torso upright.
Common mistakes
- Fast, bouncy reps — momentum does the work instead of the muscles.
- Partial range of motion — the calves work through a short range.
- Feet rolling outward — strain on the ankles.
- Leaning forward or back — you lose balance and your back suffers.
Beginner tips
- If balancing on a step is hard, hold one dumbbell and grip a support with your free hand.
- Work in the 12–20 rep range with a pause at the top.
- You can also go one leg at a time with the dumbbell in the same-side hand — that doubles the load.
Alternatives
- Подъем на носках — bodyweight for learning the technique
- Standing Barbell Calf Raise — heavier working weights
- Seated Calf Raise — more focus on the soleus
