Incline Barbell Bench Press
Muscle group: Chest
Incline Barbell Bench Press is an exercise from the “Chest” group. It mainly works: Upper chest (clavicular head of pectoralis major), Pectoralis major, Anterior deltoid (front delts). Equipment needed: Barbell, Bench.

How to do Incline Barbell Bench Press
Starting position
- Set the bench back to 30–45° and lie down with your eyes roughly under the bar.
- Feet on the floor, hips on the seat.
- Pull your shoulder blades together and press them into the pad, chest slightly lifted.
- Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width so your forearms are vertical at the bottom.
Execution
- Unrack the bar and bring it over your upper chest with straight arms.
- Inhale and slowly lower the bar to your upper chest, just below the collarbones. Elbows travel down at 45–70° to your torso.
- Touch your chest without bouncing.
- Exhale and press the bar straight up over your shoulders. Don't snap your elbows into lockout.
Common mistakes
- Lowering the bar to the middle or bottom of the chest — the path breaks and the shoulders get overloaded.
- Bench too steep — the front delts take over.
- Hips leaving the seat — the angle flattens out and the lower back takes load.
- Bouncing the bar off the chest — momentum does the work instead of the muscles.
Beginner tips
- Expect to use 15–25% less weight than on the flat bench — that's normal.
- Start with the empty bar until the path is consistent.
- Press heavy only with a spotter.
Alternatives
- Incline Dumbbell Bench Press — longer range of motion, arms work independently
- Incline Smith Machine Press (30°) — fixed path, safer without a spotter
